Parts of speech or “word classes” are classes into which words are divided according to their function in sentences.

According to the function they perform in different sentences, words are divided into different types or classes.

The particular function that a word performs is called its function.

There are 8 Parts of Speech according to English Grammar, which are:

1) Noun Definition and Examples

According to English Grammar Noun is a naming word, like Person, Place, Animal, State, or, Thing.

Examples:

Persson: Virat, Jack, Tom, Aishwarya, Deepika, Katrina, etc.

• Katrina is a beautiful Indian Actress.
• Virat Kohli is a famous cricketer.

Place: Delhi, Mumbai, New York, Kashmir, etc.

• Mumbai is a big city.

Animal: Lion, Dog, Leopard, Elephant, etc.

• Lion is our national animal.
• The dog is a pet animal.
• An elephant is a big animal.

State: Happiness, Fear, Anger, Imagination, Intelligence, Bravery, etc.

Thing: Gold, Wood, Silver, Iron, Sugar, Flour, etc.

2) Pronoun Definition and Examples

A Pronoun is a word that is used in place of a Noun.

Examples:

Rohit is an intelligent student. He reads in class eight. He obeys his teachers. All teachers like him.

Here, he, his, or him has been used in place of the noun Rohit.

So, he, his, and him are called Pronouns.

3) Verb Definition and Examples

A Verb is a word that says something about some person or thing.

Examples:

• Birds fly.
• Mr. Jack teaches English.
• She is my trainer.

• Auxiliary Verbs: Is, am, are, was, were, has, have.
• Transitive Verbs: speaks, drives, helps, ask, play, promise, read, sing, wish, write, etc.

4) Adjective Definition and Examples

An Adjective is a word used to qualify (or modify) a Noun or a Pronoun.

5) Adverb Definition and Examples

An Adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

An Adverb adds more to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

• She is walking slowly.
• She speaks quite clearly.
• It is a lovely kid.

6) Preposition Definition and Examples

A Preposition is a word placed before a Noun or its equivalent to show the relationship between the Noun or its equivalent and some other word in a sentence.

7) Conjunction Definition and Examples

A Conjunction is a word used to join sentences or words together.

Alternative Conjunctions: Either…or, neither…nor, else, or, otherwise.

8) Interjection Definition and Examples

An Interjection is a word that expresses some sudden emotion or feeling of the mind.

Such words as Ah!, Alas!, and Hark! are used to express some sudden emotion or feeling are called Interjections.

Examples:

• Ah! How badly he is injured!
• Alas! He died so young.
• Hark! The sound is heard once more.
• Hurrah! We won the match.

There are also certain Phrases that are used like Interjections to express some strong emotion or feeling:

Ah me! Alack-a-day! Good-bye! For shame! Woe is me! Good heavens! Oh dear me! Good gracious!
