Noun Meaning: Noun is a naming word (person, place, quality, state, animal, or thing).
Types of Noun
Basically, Nouns are 6 different Kinds:
- Proper Noun
- Common Noun
- Collective Noun
- Material Noun
- Abstract Noun
- Concrete Noun
“We can also include Countable and Uncountable Nouns, which we discussed already in the previous chapter, under which all these 6 Nouns are included or categorized on the basis of counts.“
1) Proper Noun
A Proper Noun is the name of some specific or particular person or thing, distinguishing it from others of its class.
Ex: Kalidas, Sonam, India, Russia
- Kalidas was a famous playwright.
- Sonam is a good girl.
- New York is a big city.
2) Common Noun
A Common Noun is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind.
Ex: Girl, Boy, Lion, Tiger, Pen, Pencil, Flower, City, Cat, etc.
3) Collective Noun
A Collective Noun is the name of a group or collection of persons, animals, or things, considered as one whole.
Ex: Army, Police, Jury, Family, Flock, Committee, Fair, etc.
4) Material Noun
A Material Noun is the name of some matter or substance of which things are made.
Ex: Gold, Silver, Wood, Iron, Flour, etc.
5) Abstract Noun
An Abstract Noun refers to some quality, state, event, concept, or feeling without physical existence.
Ex: Happiness, Fear, Anger, Luck, Intelligence, Bravery, Imagination, Misfortune, etc.
6) Concrete Noun
Any object or material, which has a physical presence and which can be touched, is called a Concrete Noun.
Ex: Television, Monitor, Laptop, Mobile, etc.
